A parent is a child's first and most important teacher. This FREE program is designed to provide parents with information and to help build their children's intellectual, language, social, and physical development from birth to age five. Each stage in a child's development is important, and comes with opportunities for learning. Parents as Teachers helps guide parents through these stages and gives them tools for success.

Who Can Participate?
Any family expecting a child or with children up to age 5 living in Victoria County.

The goal of Parents as Teachers is to provide parents with child development knowledge, provide parenting support, provide early detection of developmental delays and health issues, and increase children's school readiness. The PAT model includes four components: one-on-one home visits, monthly group meetings, developmental screenings, and a resource network for families. Parent educators conduct the home visits using structured visit plans and activities for the family.

What's Involved in a Home Visit?

During home visits, certified parent educators share helpful tips and ideas tailored to your child's age and development. These visits are also a chance for you to share your child's latest milestones, ask questions, and discuss suggestions from previous visits. Each visit is designed to provide timely age-appropriate support, including:

  • Parents will receive personal visits from a certified parent educator offering timely, age-appropriate information including:
  • Prenatal care for healthy fetal growth and development
  • What to expect as your child grows and develops
  • How to encourage intellectual development, curiosity and language development
  • Focused observations using child development information
  • Confidential discussion of parenting concerns
  • Fun activities to help your child prepare for school
  • Visits are scheduled at a convenient time and place for both the family and parent educator.
